About Shkodra

Shkodra is one of Albania's oldest cities and the traditional cultural capital of the north, set on the shores of Lake Shkodra (the largest lake in the Balkans) beneath the looming walls of Rozafa Castle. The city's history spans Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman rule, each layer visible in the architecture of the pedestrianised Old Town. Rozafa Castle, perched on a 130 m hilltop, commands views across the lake to the Montenegrin mountains and into the Drin and Buna river valleys. The Marubi National Museum of Photography preserves over 500 000 negatives documenting Albanian life from 1858 onwards. Shkodra serves as the primary gateway to the Albanian Alps — Theth and Valbona are both accessed from here — and as a cultural centre for northern Albanian traditions, including the distinctive Shkodran style of iso-polyphony and the artisanal production of filigree jewellery. The city's Italian-influenced café culture, lakeside promenade, and cycle paths make it one of Albania's most liveable cities.
