About Theth

Theth is a remote alpine village in the heart of the Albanian Alps, tucked inside Theth National Park at the head of the Shala Valley. Its isolation — until recently accessible only by a rough gravel track — has preserved a landscape of limestone peaks, glacial meadows, and traditional stone kulla (defensive tower houses) that feels frozen in the 19th century. The village is the western trailhead for the iconic Theth-to-Valbona pass hike (18 km, 1 795 m elevation gain), Albania's most celebrated trek. Within walking distance of the village centre, the Grunas Waterfall plunges 30 m into a limestone amphitheatre, while the Blue Eye of Theth (Syri i Kaltër i Thethit) is a frigid karst spring of extraordinary clarity. Theth's stone church and the Lëvizja tower — a 400-year-old kulla used for blood-feud refuge — are reminders of the region's complex cultural history. Guesthouses serving farm-to-table meals for €15–25 per night have replaced the basic shelters of a decade ago, and a new asphalt road completed in 2021 cut the journey from Shkodra to 2.5 hours.
